Every month our Emergency Response Division provides scientific expertise and services to the U.S. Coast Guard on everything from running oil spill trajectories to model where the spill may spread, to possible effects on wildlife and fisheries and estimates on how long the oil may stay in the environment.
This month OR&R responded to 12 incidents in November, including oil discharges, grounded vessels, and other pollution-related incidents.
Here are some of November's notable incidents:
Fishing Vessel Runs Aground Near Kodiak, Alaska
On Nov. 1, an 84-foot fishing vessel ran aground in Chiniak Bay near Kodiak, Alaska. The FV Laura was carrying a potential spill volume of 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel at the time of the incident. The Coast Guard requested NOAA provide a trajectory for the potential fuel release.
Both fuel tanks were compromised and oil was spotted at the wreck site. The vessel is still at the grounding location, with vessel debris in the water and onshore near the grounding site. Response continues and has shifted to debris and wreck removal.
Derelict Barge Leaks Oil in Deep River, Washington
On Nov. 4, the Coast Guard notified NOAA that a derelict barge was leaking oil in Deep River, Washington. An estimated maximum potential of 27,000 gallons of an unknown oil product was thought to be on the barge. Responders observed thick oil on the vegetation and at the high tide waterline near the barge.
Responders continue to monitor the barge, which remains stable. Weathered sheen and patches of oil are still being observed within the boomed area and are being collected with sorbent material and snare boom. Salvage and removal operations are underway.
Abandoned Vessel Sinks in Friday Harbor, Washington
On Nov. 14, an abandoned 30-foot vessel sank alongside a dock in Friday Harbor, Washington. An unknown amount of gasoline was on board and sheening was seen coming from the vessel after it sank.
The U.S. Coast Guard requested NOAA provide trajectory support for any spilled oil product. Boom was placed around the vessel and the vessel was refloated.
